About Band Checker
We explain council tax bands, exemptions, and reductions in plain English, with official sources for every claim.
What we do
Band Checker is an independent UK council tax information site. We publish research-based articles on council tax bands, exemptions, discounts, reductions, and appeals. Every factual claim cites an official government source.
We don't offer tax advice (consult your local council or an accountant for that). We explain how the system works and what your options are, so you can make informed decisions.
Our sources
We cite primary sources:
- GOV.UK (official government guidance on council tax)
- Valuation Office Agency (VOA) (band data and valuations)
- Citizens Advice (consumer guidance)
- Local Government Association (council policy)
- Valuation Tribunal (appeals process)
We don't use secondary sources (news articles, forums) for factual claims. If gov.uk or the VOA published it, we cite it. If they didn't, we don't claim it.
Editorial policy
Articles on Band Checker are AI-researched and human-reviewed. We use AI (Claude 4.5) to draft initial content from official sources, then verify every claim, citation, and statistic. We don't accept paid placements, affiliate links, or council advertising.
We review articles every 6 months to ensure rates, thresholds, and exemptions reflect current rules (council tax policy changes annually in April).
What we're not
- Not a council service. We're independent. For official queries, contact your local council.
- Not tax advisors. We explain the rules, we don't advise you what to do in your specific situation.
- Not lawyers. If you're in a formal dispute, consult a solicitor or the Valuation Tribunal.
